Family Violence Support Service

About the program

The Cooktown District Community Centre Family Violence Support Service offers case management with a counsellor who deals specifically with domestic and family violence.

Sessions involve face to face counselling in a private, confidential and safe environment. These sessions aim to help you achieve your goals, empowering you to regain control and live a happy, healthy life.

Counselling allows you to discuss your experiences with someone who is understanding, non-judgemental and supportive.

Family Violence is behaviour by one family member that causes physical, sexual and/or emotional damage.

Children’s development and well-being are negatively affected by exposure to famly violence. This is a free and confidential service providing outreach to Cooktown, Wujal Wujal, Laura and Hope Vale.

  • Adult counselling and case management
  • Child and youth counselling
  • Perpetrator behavioural change education
  • Liaison and consultation with other agencies
  • Information and referral

What can the counsellor do?

  • Listen to your experiences and situation
  • Help you understand what has happened to you and why
  • Help you to reduce feelings of blame, guilt and depression
  • Provide skills and information about healthy relationships and communication
  • Help you build social networks
  • Assess your safety and make a safety plan
  • Help you to make strategies to cope and solve problems

Family violence can lead to many problems including...

  • Why is my child behaving this way?
  • How can I improve my parenting?
  • Am I meeting my child’s needs?
  • How can we manage our household better?
  • How can we prevent or deal with statutory Child Safety intervention?

CDCC is seeking two DFV Counsellors (Male and Female Roles) to join our team, working across Cooktown, Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal and Laura.

This is an exciting and meaningful opportunity for the right person to be part of a community-based and led service doing work that matters. You’ll be joining a team that is supportive, experienced and genuinely committed to working alongside community in a respectful and practical way.

We’re looking for capable, grounded practitioners who are drawn to this work and can build strong, genuine connections. People who can sit with complexity, work collaboratively, and stay focused on safety, accountability and respectful practice, with an appreciation for local context, community connection and cultural knowledge.

Our work is guided by a trauma-informed, culturally safe and victim-survivor centred approach, with a strong focus on achieving safer outcomes for individuals and families.

Essentials:

• Current Driver License (outreach required)
• Current Blue Card (or ability to obtain)
• Demonstrated understanding of, or experience in, Domestic and Family Violence Counselling or related fields
• Skills in risk assessment, safety planning and crisis response
